2004 South Carolina
Milliken Medal of Quality Award
Winner Announced
The South Carolina Quality Forum,
administrators of
the Governor's Quality Award, the Milliken Medal of Quality and the
Champion of
Excellence Award proudly announces Dr. John G. Surak, as the recipient
of the
2004 South Carolina Milliken Medal of Quality Award. The award
recognizes
any South Carolina
resident who is widely recognized for their dedication to the
principles of
quality management and has demonstrated measurable accomplishments in
their
field. Dr, Surak, Professor, CAFLS
International Officer, Department of Applied Economics and Statistics Clemson University,
richly
deserves this award. Dr. Surak joined
the Clemson
University
faculty in 1986 and developed
one of he first integrated teaching, research, and extension (public
service)
programs in the area of quality. He is a
leader in understanding and transferring the quality technologies from
concept
to application to governmental agencies, universities, and private
industry. He delivers public service
programs to South Carolina
food processing companies in the area of quality that focus on food
safety, six
sigma, quality management and process control. Dr.
Surak served on the Board of Examiners for the
Malcolm Baldrige
National Quality Award for four years. He
brought this expertise back to South Carolina
where he served as a Judge and training
instructor for the South Carolina Governor’s Quality Award for six
years.
Dr. Surak has
concern for the small and medium sized
businesses. His research focuses on
developing quality systems which will allow these companies to compete
in the
global marketplace.
Dr. Surak was
the first person to be elected a Fellow
in both the American Society for Quality and the Institute of Food
Technologists. He
has received numerous awards and recognition
including four Clemson
University Board of Trustees Awards for Faculty Excellence. He enjoys teaching the principles of quality
management and seeing these principles being adopted by students,
fellow
faculty members, private companies and governmental agencies.
