2005 South Carolina Governor's Quality Award Winners Announced

The South Carolina Quality Forum, administrator of the Governor's Quality Award, proudly announces the South Carolina Department of Mental Health as the Silver Achiever and will be recognized at this year's Governor's Quality Award Conference to be held on October 18 at the Columbian Hotel and Convention Center in Columbia.  The Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston participated in our Explorer process and will receive recognition for their efforts.

Additionally, the Forum also administers the Milliken Medal of Quality and the Champion for Excellence awards.  This year Dr. Lawrence Brede, Jr. Senior Vice President and Executive General Manager of Wackenhut Services Incorporated (WSI) is the recipient of the Milliken Medal of Quality while Bridget Dewees of Trident Technical College was named this year’s Champion for Excellence.

"I am extremely honored to accept this award on behalf of the dedicated employees of the S.C. Department of Mental Health," said John Connery, interim director of the South Carolina Department of Mental Health.  "It reflects the dedication of our employees to quality, to our commitment to constantly improving our services to the mentally ill citizens of our state, and the stewardship of our management team.  Even in these very difficult financial times for state government, our citizens deserve no less than a state agency that is dedicated to serving its people who are mentally ill using the highest standards of care."

Shirley Cooper, Quality Manager of the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center in Charleston said “participating in the Explorer Assessment has been a tremendous learning opportunity for our medical center.  As a member of the largest health care organization in the world, we are dedicated to continuous improvement and customer service.  The Explorer Assessment gives us an opportunity to get feedback on our overall management systems by a team of quality professionals.   We are honored that the South Carolina Quality Forum is recognizing us for our efforts, but we know that the journey is not over….we are just beginning! “

Dr. Brede explained his journey to becoming this year’s Milliken Medal of Quality honoree thusly.  “After first being exposed to the Baldrige Quality Award processes and Principles in 1993, I had the opportunity to lead and be a part of a remarkable team that  applied those principles at the operational level.  While we went through some growing pains at the outset, the sharpening of some of our existing processes and the creation of new ones virtually revolutionized our entire operation.  Today, that organization is
recognized as the benchmark  in our niche of the security industry throughout the United States.

Having gone through that experience, I am convinced that adoption of Baldrige quality principles can be pivotal to the growth and improvement of any organization.  I believe in the Baldrige process because it is critical to the development of a learning organization, and learning organizations have an edge in rapidly changing or competitive environments.”

“I have adopted the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence as my personal guide for success in higher education.”  Says Bridget Dewees, our Champion for Excellence for 2005.  “I try to live and work in a continuous improvement mode; always evaluating progress and adapting or implementing change as needed. It is an honor and a pleasure to accept an award for doing work that I am passionate about.  I am thankful to God for giving me the personality and wisdom to work in this field.  I am also thankful to Dr. Thornley, our President, for having the vision for a quality program and also for allowing me the opportunity to steer the boat in this pursuit for excellence. This success also would not have been possible without the never ending support and encouragement of my family, friends and the Trident Technical College employees.”

Our keynote speaker, Eric D. Dmytrow, Vice President and Account Executive of the Juran Institute, Inc. will present the awards as he recognizes their accomplishments at the conference.
